Randy and Devin (me) frequently hang out together in Randy's basement, also known as his 'bachelor pad,' playing video games and watching movies. Both of us working on business degrees and wanting to own our own business we'd frequently discuss business ideas.
His basement is very much decorated with a Hawaiian theme with many palm trees, surfboards, Tiki men and such. He wanted a coffee table for his 'bachelor pad' and decided to build one that went with the Hawaiian theme. He looked on the internet for ideas and found some surfboard coffee tables that he liked and designed one using the ones online for inspiration. After he'd built it I went over to play video games. We were sitting there admiring the work on the coffee table and thought, "hey, we could build those and sell them as a business."
Several days later we started building a couple surfboard coffee tables with different designs and listed them on Ebay. I then created the website at http://www.rocky-mountain-surf.com to list them on and sell them. As we started making a few more Randy designed another type of legs featuring shelf, rather than the wave design. We now offer either type of legs for any of the table tops, even if that combination isn't listed on our site, it can be specially ordered.
